The Mustang Heritage Foundation is a nonprofit organization based in Georgetown that works to increase the adoption of Bureau of Land Management mustangs and burros that are housed in off-range corrals across the United States. In 2013, MHF created the Veterans & Mustangs Program, joining military veterans with American mustangs for a wild horse training experience. Under the supervision of professional horsemen, selected veterans choose a mustang from the Pauls Valley, Okla. BLM corrals. The horse is then housed at the MHF facility for eight weeks as the veteran works to gentle and gain a relationship with the animal. At the conclusion of the training period, the gentled mustang is adopted by the veteran or placed in another home.
Veterans & Mustangs is a free experience for participants and is 100 percent funded by private donations. As a fundraising opportunity, MHF will host the Larry Gatlin Patriot Concert on Saturday September 10 at the LifeAustin Amphitheatre at 6 p.m. Joining Gatlin are Texas country stars Sunny Sweeney, James Hand, and Carl Hutchens.
Tickets are $25.00 and are available online at mustangheritagefoundation.org. Contact Byron Hogan at 512-869-3225 or byron@mustangheritagefoundation.org for more information.
